Southern Italians tend to have darker skin tones compared to Northern Italians or Austrians due to a combination of historical, genetic, and environmental factors. The southern regions of Italy have been influenced by various civilizations and cultures over the centuries, including the Moors and Greeks, which may have contributed to a more diverse genetic makeup. Additionally, the warmer climate in the south may have led to increased melanin production in order to protect against sun exposure. This combination of genetic diversity and environmental factors has resulted in the darker skin tones commonly seen in Southern Italians. **
